Mom Mistakes

Two sweet faces

Occasionally, Moms make mistakes.
I just want to get that out there.
They do.
Not often.
But occasionally.
Moms are busy.
Usually keeping at least three balls in the air at any given moment.
Totally understandable . . .
My younger brother, Blair was playing in the front room.
Quietly.
Because he was always quiet.
Our baby sister, Anita, was playing nearby.
Less quietly.
Because she . . . never mind.
She had disdained her basket full of colourful toys and was climbing up on the coffee table and sliding off.
This had been entertaining her for several minutes.
Then, she mis-calculated.
Slid off a little too quickly.
And bumped something important.
Tears ensued.
Bringing Mom in a hurry from the kitchen.
She picked her sobbing daughter up from the floor where she lay in a crumpled, miserable heap.
“Blair! What did you do?!”
Blair looked up from the book he was reading, his mouth a perfect 'O' of confusion. “Ummm . . .”
He was summarily parked in the 'you've done something terrible' spot.
The piano bench.
Huh. You know I just figured something out.
Whenever we did something horrible, we were set on the piano bench to think about our sins.
Maybe that's why none of us liked playing the piano.
Just a thought.
Back to my story . . .
Blair blinked and frowned thoughtfully.
Had he done something?
He didn't think so.
He had been quietly reading.
Anita had been playing a few feet away.
On the coffee table.
“But Mom . . .!”
“Don't you 'but mom' me! You stay there and think about what you did!”
Mom marched back out to the kitchen.
Leaving a very confused little boy sitting on the piano bench in the front room.
Anita, tears forgotten, was back crawling onto the coffee table.
Yep. Moms make mistakes.
Fortunately for the future of the world as we know it, it doesn't happen often.

  1. Hi Diane, unfortunately as moms... we tend to make a few more mistakes than we care to admit... we are real however, hence why we make mistakes :)

  2. At least he didn't argue....that always makes things worse.

  3. That happened to me! Duffy knocked over the clean laundry just before I went through the laundry room, and you saw me in there and put me on a time out cuz you thought I did it!

To this day I maintain that I was innocent.

    ...

    That time...

  4. I thought we got sat down on a wooden stool, just out of reach from each other, and told not to move. You would sit there rigidly and then tattle-tail on me because I moved--one finger.

    1. I was such a little weasel! How did you put up with me all of those years . . . when you were starting the fights . . .

  5. Poor Blair! Diane, my nana would say, "this is what happens when you're quiet and don't speak your mind!" hee hee! I think all mothers are guilty of having "benched" one of our children erroneously. I wonder if he ever told her what really happened. Wonderful writing, lady. I could literally see the scene unfold before my eyes! :)

    1. Thank you, Bella! This is one of my brother's favourite stories. Told as he tells it. I wasn't there, so I had to rely on his descriptive abilities. He's good!

  6. I just pray none of my kids need counseling when they're all grown. Thank heavens they're resilient because my mistakes are OFTEN!

How'd the real truth come about? Did mom finally believe poor Blair?

    1. That's exactly what I keep thinking. Good thing kids are resilient!!! Blair told mom later, I'm sure. But he still remembers this story vividly years and years later!

  7. I suspect that's a common mistake of mothers. But in her defence, I'm sure her decision was based on past experiences.
