Years ago, shoemakers (at least the one in Milk River) were notorious for their "They'll be ready Monday" response whenever one went to the shop to ask about their shoes.
I thought this was cute. And very, very true...
At the grand old age of
ninety, Richard’s Gramps had passed away,
And it was left to Rick to sell
his home there by the bay,
And as he sorted, boxed and
bagged the curious things he saw,
So many he had never seen. He
looked at them with awe,
And in the pocket of a big coat in a closet. Right in back,
He found an ancient receipt. Wrinkled,
stained with old boot black,
Apparently, t’was for some
shoes his Gramps left for repair,
Back in 1955, the man had left
them there!
Curious, Rick looked it up and
found it listed still,
Then, clutching the receipt,
he found the shop up on a hill.
The bell rang merrily as Richard
pushed the door askew,
Then walked up to the owner,
wond’ring what the man would do,
The owner was a grandson. Yes,
the old man was his kin,
He looked down at the paper,
turned and gave our Rick a grin,
“I do believe we have your shoes,
just hang on there a sec.”
Then disappeared into the back
to go and have a check,
A moment later, he appeared,
said, “They are on the rack…
And they’ll be ready Monday.” Then
he gave the paper back.

Cause Mondays do get knocked a lot,
With poetry, we all besought
To try to make the week begin
With gentle thoughts,
Perhaps a grin?
So Karen, Charlotte, Mimi, me
Have crafted poems for you to see.
And now you’ve read what we have wrought…
Did we help?
Or did we not?
With poetry, we all besought
To try to make the week begin
With gentle thoughts,
Perhaps a grin?
So Karen, Charlotte, Mimi, me
Have crafted poems for you to see.
And now you’ve read what we have wrought…
Did we help?
Or did we not?
Next week, we will (Because it's close...) Talk of WINTER. Its beauty and woes. |

ReplyDeleteI love your Poetry Mondays!
ReplyDeleteHeeheehee! Yep, I can believe it.
ReplyDeleteCharlotte and I are talking about keeping Poetry Monday warm for you if you should ever decide to come back, if it's okay with you. For some reason, I simply enjoy writing poems, even if mine aren't the type you'd want to save for posterity, and I don't want to stop.
I love this Dianne...so true. Still, the shoes are there so there is that!
