Skating Circles

Then
When I was four, my Mom laced me into my first pair of skates.
And put the icy street in front of our Milk River home to something more useful than spinning cars.
Ahem.
I wrote about that first day and you can read it here.
Go ahead.
We'll wait . . .
Skating was a favourite pastime for many years.
But it somehow got forgotten in the decades of raising and launching our children.
I watched them skate. But for some reason, it never occurred to me to join them!
I know. Silly.
Yesterday, all that changed and after a hiatus of over 40 years, Gramma hit the ice. Fortunately without too much force. (Because we all know that hardest thing about skating is the ice, right?)
Today, my elbow hurts and my knees are wondering just what happened, but it was fun and I'll do it again!
Childhood recaptured!
Now

  1. You forgot to mention how your wrist guards saved you...

    1. I totally did! Hooray for wrist-guards! Next time, I'm also wearing elbow guards. And knee pads! ;)

  2. I'm so glad you did it, I hope you had fun. When my kids were little and got in-line skates, Hubs got me a pair too. Couldn't figure out the brakes and it wasn't pretty. I'll stick to the ice skating of my youth too.

  3. I never did learn to ice skate. Growing up in New York City, the nearest rink was three buses away - my first and last time were far from pleasurable. My son did get pretty good but reading about your Mom really made me wish I had been able to learn. When you see the professionals on the ice it sounds so easy. So after 40 years, you still (mostly) haven't lost your touch. That's wonderful.

    1. The first ten minutes were a bit tense. I pretty much hugged the wall. But after a while I got braver. Only fell twice!

    1. That makes me so happy to hear, Red! I was the oldest person on the ice and I wondered if I was being crazy for trying!

  6. Kudos to you! I think the muscles will shape up pretty quickly and you'll be flying around the rink!

  7. You didn't skate for 40 years?? You've got a lot of catching up to do. How could you not find just a few minutes to strap on the skates?

  8. Oh cool!

Here's a funny thing - when I was a kid growing up in Hawai'i one of the favorite activities for my friends and I was to go to the ICE PALACE ice skating rink!

Have only gone a couple of times living here in NYC where you would think it would be a little more normal of a winter activity, but I did stumble across an exhibit put on by a skating school in Prospect Park (my local big park). There were some very talented youngsters, of course, but the class I really remember was the adult beginner skaters. They'd picked a David Bowie medley, and their costume was just jeans and a t-shirt with a sequined star on it, and there were no triple axles or other flying leaps, the skating was in fact really shaky - but dang it, they were all smiling, excited, and enthusiastic and I loved that they were doing this thing that they were really new to and ready to strut exactly as much stuff as they'd learned. Found myself thinking that might be fun to join in on some year!
