This Band of Rubber

How glad I am for the rubber band,

It ties back hair, makes bund’ling grand,

So many times, replacing string,

Convenience in so many things!

But what I like ‘bout them the most,

To which I’d give a little toast,

The rubber band was loads of fun,

For me, my kids, and Honey Bun!

I will explain, so you’re not lost,

This game we played had little cost,

Those stretchy bands were cheaply got,

But hours of fun were hap’ly wrought . . .

Now, Husby, he of talent, much,

He took some older wood and such,

Then crafted very carefully,

Some fun, new toys for him. And me.

And one for each and every kid.

Till all were done, he kept them hid,

Then brought them out for us to see,

Crafted with delight. And glee.

Those bits of wood, now something more,

A gift to make us laugh and roar,

And chase each other round the house,

Intent on games of cat and mouse.

For what he’d crafted carefully,

(Promoting fun and repartee!)

Were little guns to take in hand,

And fire from them, those rubber bands!

Each equipped with two clothespins,

Eas’ly loaded, set to win,

E’en the youngest got the knack,

And hap’ly gave his sibs a whack!

Now, one more thing ‘bout which I’ll tell,

That Husby thought especially swell,

Each ‘gun’ shot two. Reload again.

Yes, ours shot two. While his shot ten!

    1. Right?! You should have heard the shouts of joy turn to shouts of protest when he brought out HIS gun! ;)

  2. What a fabulous story, and those guns are real works of art! I struggled all week to find rhyming uses for rubber bands and failed miserably. Hence this odd offering ...

We’re The Rubber-Band Band and we’re feeling good,
We’re working hard in your neighbourhood.
You’ll find us swinging in all kinds of places
Always doing our best to put smiles on faces.

    We’re the Rubber Band Boys
    And we like to rap
    Rap, rap, Rap, rap
    Rap-rap-Rap!

We ping and we twang and we make a big sound
So folks say, “Hey! The Rubber-Band Band’s around!”

Shorty, here, he ain’t as daft as you think -
When he’s wrapped round a jar - boy, he can make it plink!
And Lofty, there, well he’s real ace
‘Cos wrapped around that box he’s the best double bass!

    Plink, Plonk, Boom
    Boom, Ping, Twang
    It’s the crazy sound
    Of the Rubber-Band Band.

When we’re all stretched out over boxes and jars
We hit the groove and take a trip to Mars!
We’re the Rubber-Band Brothers and when we start playin’
Feet start tapping and hips are a-swayin’.

    Boom, Boom, Plink
    Plonk, Plink, Twang
    It’s the hottest sound
    From the Rubber-Band Band!

When it starts to get dark with the sun going down
The Rubber-Band Band’s gonna hit the town.
As the beat gets louder, up and down the street
The kids start jumpin’ to the rappin’ beat.

    Cos we’re the Rubber-Band Band
    And we like to rap
    Rap, rap, Rap, rap
    Rap-rap-RAP!

  3. That toy is brilliant!! It's really amazing how much fun we can have with the simplest of things. When I was young, in the Philippines, kids would just 'shoot' with their fingers, stretching the rubber band aimed at someone and then release / fire away! We were just always told never to aim for the face, hehehe.....Fun poem, Diane! Thank you. xoxo

    1. We totally did this as well, Joy! I couldn't quite get the knack, though and always ended up shooting myself. Sigh. ;)

  5. I didn't have a handy father, so I just shot rubber bands with my hands. Wasn't it fun? Oh the memories....
