Ready for anything . . . |
Today our poets cover,
Our fav'rite holidays,
In truth I will go anywhere,
As long as Husby pays...
My Husby loves to travel,
It’s just the way he is,
North or South; East or West,
The world is truly his.
He loves to take me with him,
(It’s good I love to go)
Foreign or domestic,
Above or Down Below.
But there’s one thing problematic,
One teeny, little blight -
To see most things he wants to see,
We have to take a flight.
To get us two from here to there
We hurtle through the air,
While all around me talk and eat,
I curl up in despair.
He says we’re safe, quotes stats galore,
The balanced dance of gear.
I see a tube with flimsy wings,
That gives me naught but fear.
At times, our target’s tropical,
We'll cruise and eat and swim,
But though I will be happy there,
The problem's flying in.
I love to go to a'traveling,
And be sunstroke aware.
I’ll treasure each small moment,
The pain is getting there!
Cause Mondays do get knocked a lot,
With poetry, we all besought
To try to make the week begin
With gentle thoughts,
Perhaps a grin?
So Karen, Charlotte, Mimi, me
Have crafted poems for you to see.
And now you’ve read what we have wrought…
Did we help?
Or did we not?
Next week a somewhat thoughtful chew…
Life from your pet’s point of view!
Thinking of joining us for Poetry Monday?
We'd love to welcome you!

ReplyDeleteHahaha! You can cower over here with me! ;)
DeleteI don't like flying either. Trains are the rigth way to travel!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE trains! I totally agree!
DeleteI'm so with you. I'm a terrible flyer, even after many decades. Not sure why, but that "tube in the sky" thing about sums it up.
ReplyDeleteSee? You get it!
DeleteMy husband also loves to travel. He is always planning our next travel while we are on a trip. I have wanderlust as well, but it competes with my love of being home!
ReplyDeleteI have the same conundrum. Sadly, I've discovered I can't be in two places at the same time! :(
DeleteFor years I was fine with flying until on one trip I was standing outside the 'little room' waiting for it to become vacant and I suddenly thought 'there is only a (relatively) thin layer of metal between me and thin air! Now I'm right up there with you guys about flying!
ReplyDeleteMy poem is rather long (sorry) and maybe I need to explain that in the UK Brownies are the younger version of Girl Guides, and Brown Owl is their esteemed adult leader.
Craziest Vacation Memory
I was once in the Brownies, aged about eight
When we had an adventure which now I’ll relate.
Brown Owl took us camping in Wild and Wet Wales
(No, I’m not kidding, it was a weekend of gales!)
As we entered hill country the sun it did shine
And lifted our spirits; all would be fine …
Until we started pitching our tents,
Then the wind decided to give its full vent
To the hillside on which we were scurrying around
Hammering tent pegs into the soft ground.
It started to rain, it started to pour,
We slid in the mud, we crawled on all fours,
We were making no headway, our skills were inept -
Then the wind took our tents and away they were swept!
We were cold and hungry, and a little bit frightened
But Brown Owl said ‘Chins UP!’ Our belts we must tighten
And march right behind her, a bedraggled crew;
We had faith in our Brown Owl, she’d know what to do.
We arrived at a farmhouse, Brown Owl spun a yarn
And negotiated a night in a barn.
We gathered our things and then made our way
To sleep in a barn on bales of sweet hay.
On two primus stoves Brown Owl heated up beans
And scrambled some eggs while we split into teams
And played silly games to get dry and warm
And ready ourselves for a night in the barn.
And hours later, after food and tall tales
About scrabbling rats that lived in the bales,
We eventually fell asleep, safe and sound,
And thankful to know that Brown Owl was at hand.
I LOVE THIS!!!! Our Girl Guides program is exactly the same. You had one AWESOME Brown Owl! What an adventure!
DeleteStupendous job!!!
What a great story-poem! Your Brown Owl was smart.
DeleteI am not a fan of flying either. A sometimes necessary evil.
ReplyDeleteLove SpikesBestMate's poem too. We have brownies here in Oz as well. And the very wise Brown Owl has saved many a day/night.
Those unsung hero women who make what could have been a true disaster into an adventure we remember forever! God bless the 'Brown Owls' of the world!
DeleteMy husband hates to fly - I can relate to this!
ReplyDeleteI had never flown a lot but one day around 1996 I suddenly developed a fear of flying. I don't know what triggered it. I haven't been on a plane since July of 1996, which rather limits my choice of vacations. My husband is a reluctant flier himself so I don't get dragged along on any flights he wants to take. I admire you!
ReplyDeleteFlying now scares the bejabbers out of me. Didn't when i was younger, but something has changed.
ReplyDeleteI don't particularly like flying either.. however, looking forward to when we do again!
ReplyDeleteKaren - I really enjoyed your poem. I'm sorry I cannot access your own Comments facility as I don't have a Google account, so I usually resort to Diane's Comments to give feedback on such occasions.
