Life’s a Beach

Only in Summer...

I love beaches—they love me,

The two of us are friends, you see,

And sitting on a beach is swell,

With water, warm. And sand as well.

But here in Canada, you’ll find,

(Our attitude is quite resigned)

In winter, there’s not much allure…

It’s a matter of the temperature.

The sun may look all warm and bright,

It welcomes with its cheerful sight,

But step outside, you realize,

It’s fooled your summer-seeking eyes.

And sitting on the beach like that,

With swimming suit and shady hat,

Is just an invitation to,

Turn you a pretty frozen blue.

And diving in the waters? Well,

It’d cause from me a painful yell,

And scurrying for someplace warm,

To keep my tender bits from harm.

So, if upon a beach I’d sit,

In beach attire, on sand sunlit,

If I’d like to retain a pulse…

I’d better head for ‘someplace else’!

Cause Mondays do get knocked a lot,

With poetry, we all besought
To try to make the week begin
With gentle thoughts,
Perhaps a grin?
So
KarenCharlotteMimi, me
Have crafted poems for you to see.
And now you’ve read what we have wrought…
Did we help?
Or did we not?

Next week, it’s praises we will sing,

The thing that we like best ‘bout SPRING!

Thinking of joining us for Poetry Monday?

We'd love to welcome you!

  1. So many of us are counting the days until we can return to a beach. Back to winter last week with more snow squalls, it's a dream that seems so far away...

    1. Same here, Alana! Snow squalls last week. 4 inches of the white stuff! This week, all bright and beckoning. Till you step outside and get hit with the -10 degree wind! Sigh.

  2. In the UK we really do have to catch the warm, sunny days when we can as the weather can change here in the space of a day or even less. And the sea always seems cold to me - Brrrr! I'm getting to be an old softie.

Here's someone who loves the sand and the sea whatever the weather. (You may have to read it twice as I've messed about with rhythm/rhyme/number of lines in a verse, so it is a bit more difficult to read than usual.)

    A Day At The Beach

Buster is getting excited, there’s a whiff of fun in the air
He’s hoping he’ll be included in the plans that the family share
As they busy themselves in the kitchen and run back and forth to the car
With buckets and spades and hampers and blankets
And a game that they call Hoop-La!

After a short uncomfortable journey in the back of the car squeezed between
The blankets and buckets and spades and hampers
Buster can’t wait to escape and is keen

To race through the dunes and down to the beach -
He just loves the wide open space
With salt in the air and spray in his fur
And perhaps some new doggy friends who’ll play Chase!

He gallops along the edge of the shore, kicking up the glittering water
Then it’s back to the hampers and blankets and buckets and spades
Where the family is setting up Hoop-La!

And when the pegs have been set in the sand, and the standing line has been drawn,
The family lines up to throw hoops over pegs, and Buster’s attention soars
To the flying hoops that skim like a Frisbee - and Frisbees are made to be caught!
So Buster leaps, twisting and turning mid-flight, to catch the hoops in his jaws.

Then the hampers are opened and out come the victuals,
The sandwiches, cakes and the tea
And Buster tucks into a sausage or two (or possibly even three!)

As the family snoozes or passes the time telling tall tales or going for a swim,
Buster roams round the rockpools peering at crabs
And tiny fish that blow bubbles at him.

Then all too soon, as the sun goes down, it’s back into the car they all pile
And Buster, squeezed in between blankets and Hoop-La! and buckets and spades,
Dreams on with his tired-doggy smile.

    2. Absolutely brilliant, SBM! Oh, to be like Buster. All enthusiasm. And not like me--huddled in a blanket by the fire! Although I'm intrigued by Hoop-La and said victuals! ;)

  4. Even in our wimpy winter our beaches are alluring - and it is too long since I have seen one.
